Women's Preventive Health:
Women of childbearing years receive physical exam including pap smear along with various laboratory tests . Education and counseling regarding contraception are offered upon request.
Breastfeeding Support Service
The Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly support breastfeeding. We encourage all women to breastfeed their infants by offering breastfeeding education and assistance. Assistance is provided by a breastfeeding peer counselor, and WIC nutritionists. The peer counselors make hospital visits and home visits to breastfeeding mothers for education and support as well as potential problems. They also are available at the Health Department and by phone to answer questions. There is no charge for breastfeeding counseling services.

Child Health Program
The Child Health Program provides an opportunity for improved health status of children from birth to age 21. A variety of services is offered including complete physical exams along with hearing and vision screening, urinalysis, hemoglobin, height and weight measurement, assessment of immunization status, and educational information. Physicals for school and sports are also available. Appointments for sick visits are also available.
Child Care Health Consultant (CCHC)
The Clay County Health Department Child Care Health Consultant provides teacher training and education regarding health and disease prevention for children, providers and families participating through their child care center. This includes sanitation, communicable and contagious diseases, health assessment, immunization tracking assistance and information, and services for children with special needs. An additional component provides support of best practices in child care policies and procedures by offering educational opportunities, followed with examples of best practices. This provides the child care staff with the most current guidelines to update and maintain their existing policy and procedure manuals.
Care Management for At-Risk Children (CMARC)
The goal of CMARC is to improve your child’s care by linking you to services that will meet the specific needs of your child and family.
Care Management for At-Risk Children (CMARC) is a program offered at no charge for children birth to 5 years of age who:

Have long-term medical conditions and/or
-
are dealing with challenging levels os stress; and/or
-
are referred by the child’s doctor
When the care manager receives a referral, they will talk with you to determine whether your child and family could benefit from CMARC services.
Your CMARC Care Manager recognizes YOU as the expert on your child.

Pregnancy Care Management
Pregnancy Care Management services are available to pregnant women enrolled in North Carolina Medicaid statewide, and to a limited number of low income, uninsured pregnant women in some counties.
Pregnancy Care Managers are registered nurses or social workers who will work with you and your prenatal care provider to ensure you receive the best possible care while you are pregnant and after you deliver your baby. Our goal is to help you have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
How Does It Work?
If you have certain conditions you may qualify for Pregnancy Care Management Services. Examples include having had a preterm baby, a chronic illness such as diabetes, or other concerns like wanting help to quit smoking. Your care manager will work closely with you and your prenatal care provider to meet your needs during your pregnancy. Ifyou have to go to the hospital during your pregnancy, a pregnancy care manager will contact you afterward, to see how you are doing. Your care manager can talk with you on the phone, meet you at your prenatal visits, or meet you in your home or at a location that is convenient for you. Pregnancy Care Management is provided at no cost and participation is voluntary.

Going over your prenatal care provider’s plan for a healthy pregnancy

Coordinating your care across all of your providers

Helping you get the services you need, like medical care, transportation, food or stable housing

Referring you to other programs, like childbirth or breastfeeding education classes, family planning and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program

Offering ways for you to take care of yourself during pregnancy

Providing assistance in managing any medications you may be taking
-
Meeting with you after you have been in the hospital or the emergency room

Making follow-up appointments

Your Prenatal Care Provider: Consistent Care for You and Your Baby
It is important to start seeing a prenatal care provider early in your pregnancy. – Your prenatal care provider is your “home base” for your pregnancy and postpartum health needs. –
Contact your prenatal care provider for any questions or health concerns during your pregnancy. –
Make an appointment with your prenatal care provider for a check-up and family planning after you’ve had your baby. –
Your prenatal care provider can connect you to other doctors if you need special care during your pregnancy.

Dental Varnish Project
“Into the Mouths of Babes” provides an initial and follow-up oral screening as well as dental health education, and a fluoride varnish application to all children under 3 who have Medicaid or Health Choice coverage. The goal of this program is to reduce early dental caries (cavities and tooth decay) during early childhood.
